HOW TO GET AN EDUCATION IN ANY ENVIRONMENT

HOW TO GET AN EDUCATION IN ANY ENVIRONMENT

1. Don't expect to be appreciated. Your only expectation should be to learn.

2. Don't come to school to have personal relationships. Keep your eye on the career you are here to achieve.

3. Don't allow others or your environment to affect who you are.

4. Look for opportunities to improve the classroom atmosphere without commenting on the challenges. Influence your environment in a positive way, don't let your environment infuence you negatively.

5. Each day is an opportunity to learn to work with different personalities. This is a blessing, even when it does not seem so.

6. Do your classwork and services well, remembering your mission is to be a daymaker, not a daybreaker. A cosmetologist is in their career to serve others.

7. Remember to do your best, where you are. Complete your education in a timely manner, without rushing. Keep in mind you are building your career. This building is done in steps, as on a ladder. Learning is done one step at a time. You must place your foot on the step firmly. If you skip a step or place only a part of your foot on the step, you will fall

Duty List Week of 11/9/2020 Shop Manager: Carissa

Good morning!  It's gonna be a GREAT DAY! How do I know?  Because it's up to you to make it that way and you can do it!

Remember, professional dress is very important for building your clientele.  You are expected to be in uniform every day.

How does your station look?  I will be checking stations periodically.

The following is a list of guidelines to keeping a neat station:

1.  Clean the mirror
  • No stickers, please.  These are difficult to remove.
  • No more than 1 photo - think about this  before you post a pic of your kids...do you want a photo of your kids that some weirdo in your chair can see?
2.  Station surface
  • nothing on the surface other than a few styling products and a water bottle.
  • Some salons will want nothing left on the surface when you leave for the day.
  • Dirty towels should be put in the hamper immediately after use.
3. All drawers should be dirt/dust/hair free and neatly organized with clean tools.
  • Use baskets/containers to keep items separate and organized
  • Remember, no air tight containers to keep down the growth of bacteria
4. Combs and brushes
  • CLEAN - no hair or debris
  •  Combs and brushes should be kept separately from all cutting equipment.
5. Chair
  • clean and disinfect after each client
  • wiped down top to bottom
  • base should be clean and shiny.
6.  Floor
  • Sweep after each client - this includes your mannequin
  • Remember to sweep under your station
  • End of day move your mat and chair for a thorough sweep/mop

Do you have an empty station next door?

  • The empty station is not for your clutter.  It should be clean and clear.
  • Take the initiative to wipe down the empty station next to you at the end of each day.

Stand back and look at your station.  If you were a client who is an excellent housekeeper, would you be comfortable sitting in your chair for a service?

Professional Dress

Professional dress is extremely important in our industry.  We have a uniform for your success!  If you are cold, I suggest ordering a scrub jacket similar to the one below.  You can also wear a long sleeved black t-shirt under your scrub top. Please adhere to our uniform policy.  Clean uniform scrubs, black shoes, hair styled, makeup as appropriate. Thank you!

Soon to be graduating...

Your paperwork for your State Exam is completed online.  We do this together.  You will need a credit card card for payment.  You will also need your completion certificate for a 4 hour initial AIDS Certification course and your social security number.  If you have any felonies or misdemeanors on your record you will need your case information.  Without all of this information, your application will not be processed. It is best to schedule your paperwork for your State Exam at the end of the day, after everyone has left, so we will be uninterrupted.

Kahoot for Chapter 19

Please look for the Chapter 19 kahoot by Ms.ChandlerCosmo.

Review of Class Policies we discussed Friday

Q:  What hours are we expected to be in class?

A:  Class begins at 9:00 am and ends at 3:30 pm except for every other Thursday when hours are 9:00 am - 7:30 pm.  You are expected to be in class on time, the entire day, every day.

Q:  What time is lunch?

A:  Lunch is 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm.  You are expected to eat your lunch during this time. If you leave and pick up your lunch, you are still expected to be back to your classwork at 12:30 pm.  Lunch is   30 minutes.  Extended lunch is not acceptable.

Q:  Should you have a break?

A:  There are no breaks other than lunch.  Do not take a break.

Q:  What is the cell phone policy?

A:  No cells phones for any reason.   If you have an emergency/urgent situation, please let me know you  need to be excused to make a  call.  Please feel free to give your family members my office phone number.

Q:  Can we have food in class?

A:  During pleasant weather, please eat at the picnic tables.  No snacking, eat breakfast before you  arrive.  Food is for lunch time only.  You may have a drink in the classroom (not on your station) in a cup with a lid, that does not sweat.  If you happen to forget and have a cup that does sweat, please remember to put a napkin/paper towel beneath your cup.  This is to protect your chromebook from water damage.  Keep your drink away from the chromebook in case of a spill!

Station Expectations - VERY IMPORTANT

I know our salon is not open BUT I do want you to focus on keeping your station clean and clutter free throughout the day, everyday.  Word of warning, I'm going to be very picky about station cleanliness going forward. It's time to develop good station cleanliness habits.  Always keep in mind Florida Law Salon Sanitation Requirements.  It's the law.

Stylists tend to get very possessive of their station and want to decorate or keep the station in whatever condition they are comfortable with. It's not about you.  It's about keeping the client happy and comfortable.  Remember, you do not own your station, the salon does.

The following is a list of guidelines to keeping a neat station:

1.  Clean the mirror
  • No stickers, please.  These are difficult to remove.
  • No more than 1 photo - think about this, do you want a photo of your kids that some weirdo in your chair can see?

  • Remember, no air tight containers to keep down the growth of bacteria
4. Combs and brushes

Please Complete Your Homework Before Testing

Please remember, having all of your homework and your notes pages completed before taking a test is a requirement. If you take the test and have not completed all of your homework, I do not have to accept the test grade.  I can give you a 0 and require you to retake the test.

Although you may pass a test without completing the homework first, you are much less likely to retain the information. Retaining the information is of the utmost importance for the safety of the client and passing your state licensing exam.

Duty List Week of 10/26/20

Remember to:

  1. Sign off each day that you have completed your task
  2. Let your Shop Manager know your task is completed
  3. Let your Shop Manager know if for any reason you cannot complete your task so he/she can see that it gets done

It is critical that our classroom is always kept clean and organized.  Please remember, we are a team.  Be respectful to one another. Treat other  as you would like to be treated.  Pick up after yourself and help one another.  If you see something that needs cleaned up during the day, just do it, without complaint.

Please remember completing your duty is part of your employability skills grade.  You will have a deduction in points each day that your duty is not completed or not completed to my satisfaction.
Thank you all so much for your cooperation.  Working together creates a pleasant environment for all.
