HOW TO GET AN EDUCATION IN ANY ENVIRONMENT

HOW TO GET AN EDUCATION IN ANY ENVIRONMENT

1. Don't expect to be appreciated. Your only expectation should be to learn.

2. Don't come to school to have personal relationships. Keep your eye on the career you are here to achieve.

3. Don't allow others or your environment to affect who you are.

4. Look for opportunities to improve the classroom atmosphere without commenting on the challenges. Influence your environment in a positive way, don't let your environment infuence you negatively.

5. Each day is an opportunity to learn to work with different personalities. This is a blessing, even when it does not seem so.

6. Do your classwork and services well, remembering your mission is to be a daymaker, not a daybreaker. A cosmetologist is in their career to serve others.

7. Remember to do your best, where you are. Complete your education in a timely manner, without rushing. Keep in mind you are building your career. This building is done in steps, as on a ladder. Learning is done one step at a time. You must place your foot on the step firmly. If you skip a step or place only a part of your foot on the step, you will fall
.

Contact and Enrollment Information for FCTC.

Email for Cosmetology Instructor Tammy Vaughn.  tammy.vaughn@fctc.edu.  Her office number is 904-547-3452.  As she is usually busy with students, the best way to contact Tammy is her email.

The Student Recruiter, Ms. Patterson, will be your first contact to start the enrollment process.

Ms. Augustus is the Student Advisor I recommend.  She knows our program well and is the advisor that worked with me the most. Ms. Guldswog will also be very helpful.

Clean Up

Please remember, EVERYONE is expected to clean up after themselves.  When completing a service, be sure to clean your area, as well as your supplies.  Everyone was given a color bowl and brush in their kit.  There are no longer any school bowls and brushes in the dispensary. Please make sure all of your kit supplies and anything you have purchased and brought into class has your name or initials on it.   Any supplies not identified with your name or initials and left in the dispensary, the salon area, or classroom,  will be disposed of.  This is the policy whether the item is clean or dirty.  If you happen to leave something dirty or clean and it does have your name or initials, you will find it on your station.  Keep in mind, if you were to leave your stuff laying around in the real world, if you don't lose your job, the staff you work with will make your life miserable.  If they don't like you the staff will run you off!

BARBICIDE:  Make use of your Barbicide jars on your station so your combs are not lost.  Barbicide should be changed DAILY.  Remember to remove items from Barbicide after the required 10 minutes. If you do not, the item will start to deteriorate.  You will have to purchase new supplies more frequently because they will break easily.

READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE DUTY LIST.

Don't get the dirty reputation. Once you have that reputation, it will be difficult to get others to look at your cleanliness in a positive way even when you have made the change. Any negative reputation will spread all over town before you know it and getting a job may become more difficult as time goes by.

Dress Code

Please remember to follow dress code as per your handbook. This is black scrubs with our logo.   If you are chilly, although not official part of our dress code, you may wear a long sleeved T-shirt beneath your scrub shirt in black, white, gray, tan. (neutral color)  You may also wear a black sweater. As part of our dress code, everyone received a chemical smock in their kit that can also be worn when you are chilly.  Hoodies, outdoor jackets, etc are not acceptable. Shoes are to be black, non skid.  Hair is to be neat and fashionable.  If you need to throw it up, use cute accessories.  We don't want to look like we're going to the gym. Makeup should look fresh, not yesterday's makeup and looking like you just rolled out of bed.  Minimal makeup is acceptable, such as mascara/lip gloss.  You don't have to look like you're going out to the club.  You just need a simple, quick and easy daytime look. Hands should be neatly manicured.  If your polish is chipped, just take it off until you have time to get a manicure. The client will determine by our appearance whether or not they are comfortable with us performing their service.  We are in the beauty business, so look like it.  Correct uniform also requires wearing your name badge at all times. Put it on. Just a reminder, if you are not in dress code, you may be asked to go home or sign out until you are dressed appropriately.

I know many of you have responsibilities outside the classroom that wear you down and leave you feeling tired.  Sometimes it makes it difficult to come to school and stay awake.  Please remember, though, I cannot give you hours for being in class if you are asleep.  If you're that tired, you need to go home and rest.
